I'm committed to using fewer chemicals and more natural products in our home but I found myself really missing that fresh smell that a quick spritz with a fabric freshener gives you. This easy to make method will show you how to make a room spray that is made from natural ingredients, great smelling and also a natural deodoriser. It is made from essential oils so you can choose whichever suits your mood or taste and your house will smell amazing without you having to breathe in a lot of chemicals and artificial scents.
Why use a natural deodorising spray?
I've been really trying my best to reduce the amount of single use plastic we get through, and along with this reduce the amount of chemicals we use in our home. If your cleaning cupboard is anything like mine was, you will open it to see a tonne of plastic bottles, all full of all sorts of different chemicals. It's not only the chemicals that I have a problem with, it is the different chemicals mixing together. For example, if I am cleaning a room I might use a multi surface spray to clean tables and surfaces, polish to shine anything that needs it, floor cleaner on the floor, glass cleaner on the windows and a deodorising spray on the fabrics, carpets and rugs.
I have no idea how these chemicals are reacting with each other, but I do know that my family are breathing in the fumes and toxic chemicals from these every day and we really don't need to be. So I am slowly replacing the cleaning items that we use with natural versions or homemade versions. I'm absolutely loving the natural cleaning spray that I made and I have been using it a lot lately. It cleans really well and leaves a lovely smell so I thought I would make a natural room spray as I really missed that lovely fresh smelling effect that you get when spraying down the sofas, cushions and rugs. Next up on my list of things to try to make at home is homemade air fresheners so watch this space!
What you will need to make a room spray
- 450ml distilled water
- 2 tablespoon bicarbonate soda
- 10 drops of essential oils
- glass spray bottle
The ingredients list for this room spray are really simple and this is such a basic recipe but so effective. You will need an empty spray bottle. I use these * amber glass ones which are tinted so they help to preserve the essential oils you will be using but you can use any clean and empty spray bottle that you have at home.
You will also need distilled water. It is important to use distilled water because it is free from contaminants such as bacteria and viruses and also other chemicals that are present in tap water such as lead and sulphate. You can pick up distilled water in your local chemist, big supermarkets or on amazon.
You will need bicarbonate of soda to add to the water. This provides the spray with it's smell neutralising effect as bicarbonate of soda is a natural deodoriser. You can get bicarbonate of soda in most supermarkets, you will find it in the baking aisle, or if you need larger quantities for cleaning take a look in the cleaning aisle of bigger supermarkets and shops. You might want to use a small funnel to ensure the water and bicarb of soda get into the bottle without making a mess.
Lastly you will need your favorite essential oils. Make sure that you buy the highest quality oils that you can afford. You don't really want to be buying generic essential oil from the grocery store, instead choose a reputable essential oil supplier or brand. Different essential oils have different properties as well as scents so you will want to do your research into which oils you use. Some oils aren't safe to use around pets so if you have furry friends at home then it is important that you use pet safe essential oils. There is some useful information on pet safe essential oils on this website. I also really like the Our Oily House blog for information on different essential oils benefits and uses.
How to make natural room spray
- 450ml distilled water
- 2 tablespoon bicarbonate soda
- 10 drops essential oil
The process for making the spray is really simple. For a 500ml spray bottle (18 oz spray bottle), fill it most of the way to the top with warm distilled water. Add two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda and ten drops of essential oils of your choice. You can mix and match 5 of one oil and 5 of another or use all 10 drops of the same oil. If you wanted your spray to smell stronger you could increase this amount to 20 drops, but I would say that would be a maximum.
Essential Oil Room Spray Recipes
There are some great combination of essential oils which smell amazing, and you can create your own blend with a bit of experimenting, perfect for making room sprays. They smell so much better than store-bought room sprays or commercial air fresheners and aren't full of harmful chemicals and will make your home smell amazing.
Here are some of my favourite essential oil blends and different scents for making a bottle of room spray or for use in homemade air freshener recipes. Try a few combinations or come up with your own favorite scent.
How to use DIY room spray
You can use this spray to freshen up your house as often as you like. I like to spray it into the air and onto bedding and sofas, cushions, rugs etc. Nothing gives me better cozy vibes than getting into a gorgeous smelling bed or relaxing on the sofa and breathing in the fresh scent of a DIY room spray as opposed to the harsh fake smell of synthetic air fresheners full of toxic ingredients. My favorite way to use this room spray is to use it to freshen the sofa whilst I am plumping the cushions. Give the bottle a little shake and apply liberally.
What can I use natural room spray on?
Make sure you test this homemade essential oil room spray before you use it on valuable or delicate surfaces. I use it on my sofas, carpets, cushions, rugs and bedding and also as a general room spritz but if you are unsure a great way to test is to use it on an inconspicuous area first.

I have made a YouTube video showing how to make your own room spray as a natural alternative if you find it easier to watch a video tutorial of this DIY room spray.
