Why You'll Love This Recipe

These vegan black bean burgers are the perfect option when you want a homemade plant-based meal that's simple, satisfying, and full of flavour. The combination of mashed black beans and grated carrots creates a delicious texture that holds together well, while the spices add a warm flavour to every bite!

They're made with simple ingredients and are easy to customize with your favourite toppings and sauces. Serve them in a burger bun with fresh toppings, enjoy them alongside sweet potato fries or creamy coleslaw, or make a batch ahead of time for quick and easy meals throughout the week.

Ingredients

These burgers feature a wholesome combination of nutrient-dense ingredients. Black beans serve as a solid base, offering plenty of protein, fiber, and key minerals like iron and magnesium. Carrots add subtle sweetness along with a healthy dose of beta-carotene-an antioxidant linked to vision and immune support. Onions not only boost flavour, but also supply vitamin C and other beneficial phytochemicals. The tomato puree contributes lycopene, which may support heart health.

To bring it all together, rice flour provides a gluten-free binding agent that keeps these patties light and easily digestible. Meanwhile, spices like paprika, chili flakes, and cumin lend warmth and a dose of antioxidants, rounding out a nourishing and flavourful meal.

Ingredients neatly arranged on a marble surface in individual bowls: black beans, shredded cheese, chopped onions, tomato paste, flour, mixed spices, and a cup of oil.

You will need...

  • black beans (cooked or from the can)
  • grated carrots
  • diced onion
  • passata or tomato puree
  • rice flour
  • olive oil or cooking spray (for frying)
  • paprika
  • chili flakes
  • salt
  • pepper
  • cumin

For exact quantities see the recipe card below.

Instructions

Chopped onions and garlic sautéing in a pan on a striped towel, surrounded by bowls of grated cheese, black beans, and a cup with tomato paste and spices.

Start from frying a diced onion on a pan with a little bit olive of oil or cooking spray.

Once onion is golden brown add black beans and cook until all the moisture is gone for about 5-6 minutes

A skillet with cooked shredded hash browns, black beans, and a portion of tomato paste. A fork is placed on the right side of the skillet.

Add grated carrots, tomato puree and rice flour, gently smash the beans with fork or potato masher and mix everything very well, add dry spices: paprika, chili flakes, cumin, salt and pepper. Cook for about 5-7 minutes. Leave it to cool.

Form ½ inch patties. Depends on the size of your patties you should be able to make 3 or 4 patties.

Two uncooked bean patties on parchment paper above a pan with a broken, cooked bean patty and a fork.

Cooking Methods

Oven

To bake the burgers, place them on a lined baking tray and cook at 400°F (200°C) for around 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through. This method is great if you're cooking a larger batch and want an easy hands-off option.

Air Fryer

For a crispier finish with less oil, cook the burgers in the air fryer until heated through and lightly golden. Cooking times will vary depending on your air fryer , so check them as they cook.

Variations and Substitutions

Bean Alternatives

While black beans lend a rich, hearty flavour, feel free to use other beans such as kidney beans, pinto beans, or chickpeas. Each type of bean brings its own unique taste and texture-kidney beans are slightly firmer and pinto beans have a creamier consistency.

Vegetable Swaps

Carrots provide natural sweetness, but you can try grated zucchini, sweet potato, or even finely chopped mushrooms for variety. Just keep an eye on moisture levels-if you're using wetter veggies like zucchini, you may need to add a bit more flour.

Flour Options

Rice flour keeps the recipe gluten-free and helps bind the mixture. However, oat flour, chickpea flour, or all-purpose flour can work as substitutes. Adjust the amount as needed for the right texture.

Oil Substitutions

Olive oil is great for pan-frying, but you can also use avocado oil, coconut oil, or your favourite cooking spray. If you prefer to reduce oil, just be sure to use a non-stick pan or baking sheet.

Storage

Allow the burgers to cool completely before storing. Place them in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat, warm the burgers in a frying pan over medium heat, in the oven until heated through, or in the microwave for a quick option. For the best texture, reheating in the oven or on the stove will help keep the outside slightly crisp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my burgers falling apart?

Black bean burgers can fall apart if they're too wet or too dry. To fix this, adjust the binder (in this case, rice flour or another flour) as needed. Make sure to drain and pat dry the beans thoroughly, and don't over-mash them.

Can I freeze these burgers?

Yes! After forming the patties, place them on a parchment-lined tray, freeze, until solid, then transfer to an airtight container. Thaw in the fridge before cooking for best results.

Are these burgers gluten-free?

Yes, if you use rice flour (as recommended) or another gluten-free flour like oat or chickpea flour. Always check the labels to ensure no hidden gluten sources.

What toppings go well with these burgers?

Try lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, vegan cheese slices, or avocado. Enhance the flavour with tangy sauces like vegan mayo, mustard, barbecue sauce, or your favourite burger sauce.
