Once you learn how to make body butter, you'll be surprised at how much better it can be than store-bought options. We've been using our homemade body butter consistently, and it has made a world of difference
I've been trying to replace some of the products in our home with natural versions, even homemade ones where I can. We made this homemade body butter to give to people as gifts last Christmas and it went down really well. I've decided to stop buying plastic tubs of body butter and make it ourselves at home. I love that the ingredients are all natural and chemical free which makes me happier using it on my children's skin. So I thought I would share with you a step by step tutorial on how to make body butter so that you can make it for yourselves.
I suffer from dry skin on my body and my children have mild eczema so we really need to use richly moisturising products but ones that are good for sensitive skin. We've had no problems using this DIY whipped body butter and I feel that our skin is in much better condition. I love to use it at night so it can absorb through the night but you can also use it in the morning as it does soak into the skin quite quickly. It really is the best DIY body butter.
Vegan Whipped Body Butter Ingredients
There are five main ingredients to this body butter
- shea butter
- cocoa butter
- olive oil
- coconut oil
- essential oils
These are all natural ingredients, if you can use the best quality ingredients you can afford it will make all the difference. The benefit of making your own products is that you know exactly what the ingredients are and what goes into making each item.
For exact quantities see the recipe card below.
Shea butter is full of fatty acids and vitamins which make it an ideal cosmetic ingredient for softening skin. Shea butter also has anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
Cocoa butter has a high fat content and the fat forms a protective barrier over the skin to hold in moisture. Healthline also states that "cocoa butter is also rich in natural plant compounds called phytochemicals. These substances may improve blood flow to the skin and slow skin ageing by protecting against damage from the sun's harmful UV rays."
Olive oil is full of vitamins and antioxidants that protect the skin from damage by free radicals. Try to use an organic extra virgin olive oil for the most benefits.
Coconut oil has so many benefits it has almost become a holy grail product for all sorts of uses. Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that can help to protect the skin from harmful bacteria.

Cornflour or cornstarch is an optional ingredient here. I put it in because it helps the body butter to feel less greasy, but it's definitely not essential. Whipping up this body butter also reduces any greasiness that this body butter might have.
Essential oils - essential oils are really the best part of this homemade body butter recipe. Make sure that you buy the best quality essential oils that you can afford and do your research before using them. For example some essential oils wouldn't be suitable to put on your skin if you were heading into the sunlight. I love using orange essential oil for my night time body butter as the scent combined with the cocoa butter makes it smell like chocolate orange! My other favorite essential oils to use are vanilla and lavender essential oil. Experiment with different essential oils and different scents until you find a combination that you love. Don't be tempted to use fragrance oils instead of essential oils - they are not the same thing and won't have the same benefits and natural effects.
The full vegan whipped body butter recipe and method is below but I have also made a YouTube video showing exactly how to make this diy body butter recipe, if you find watching a tutorial easier.

Instructions

Measure out the shea butter, cocoa butter, olive oil and coconut oil into a glass or heatproof bowl and place over a saucepan of boiling water or a double boiler.
Stir occasionally until everything has melted together into a big oil mixture.

Remove from the heat and put into the freezer until cloudy and nearly set. You want to be able to press a finger into the mixture and it leave a dent. If you over freeze it into a hard butter, just leave it on the counter at room temperature for a little bit to soften a little.

Whisk with an electric mixer or hand mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy. This might take a little while and you will want to scrape the edges of the bowl down halfway through.

When it is light and smooth and fluffy, mix through the corn starch and add your essential oils.

Decant your finished product into glass pots or jars with lids.
This shea butter and coconut oil body butter is relatively easy to make, you will just need a little time. You essentially melt all the ingredients together and cool until set before whipping them up. The resulting homemade body butter will keep in a lidded jar for about 3 months, although you will love it so much I'm sure you will use it before then! It also makes a beautiful gift idea, eco-friendly gift ideas are my favourite - I would be delighted to receive this!

FAQs
Is shea butter vegan?
Shea butter is a plant based fat made from the nuts of the Shea tree - so it is completely vegan. You can often find organic shea butter which is ideal.
How do you make body butter stay creamy?
To keep this body butter creamy keep it at a cool room temperature. If it loses it's creamy consistency you can just whip it up again.
What does arrowroot do in body butter?
Arrowroot powder can help the body butter to feel less greasy. In this recipe I use cornflour or cornstarch which does the same thing. If you use arrowroot instead you will need to use twice as much. It is definitely worth adding if you can as it will make for a less greasy body butter.
Why is my homemade body butter so greasy?
It might be that you need to whip it up more or add a little more cornflour.
What oils are good for body butter?
Coconut oil, olive oil, rosehip oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, vitamin E oil and jojoba oil are all great liquid oil for the skin and mix well with shea butter. Great essential oils for the skin are lavender, rose, frankincense, roman camomile and bergamot.
How to use whipped body butter
Scoop a small amount of moisturiser from the glass jar with clean hands and rub into your skin. You will get extra moisturising benefits if you do this straight after getting out of the shower or bath. A little goes a long way but don't be shy about putting a decent amount on as it will soak in beautifully.

Does the cornstarch or arrowroot flour make the butter chalky on the skin? Does it leave a dusty residue on the skin?
Alina Davies says
Hi, no it doesn't leave any residue or make it chalky at all. It just helps to make the body butter less oily. Hope that helps!
