When lilac bushes burst into bloom their beautiful flowers don't just delight your taste buds in lilac ice cream-they can also soothe dry skin. This easy lilac cream recipe captures the sweet, floral scent of fresh lilac blossoms in a rich, whipped balm that melts instantly into face, body or hands.

The Ingredients (and why they work)

Five small bowls contain liquid and solid ingredients, including oils, white pellets, a purple powder, and a small brown essential oil bottle on a light gray surface.

For exact quantities see the recipe card below.

Instructions

A glass jar with a metal lid, filled with dark, leafy material and liquid, sits on a light-colored surface against a white brick wall background.

Make your infused oil with lilac flowers and a carrier oil. Make sure the flowers are completely dry. Then strain.

Add infused oil, shea butter, and candelilla to a double broiler and slowly melt on low until it is all melted.

Take off from heat and allow it to cool all the way down.

If using, add in your preservative, mica powder, and essential oils.

Once it is hard, whip with an immersion blender.

Blend it one more time, than put in your containers.

Notes:

  • You can use a preservative to help extend the shelf life 6+ months.  Depending on the preservative you use, will depend on how much to add.
  • Mica powder is also optional, I just used it for the color in pictures.

Variations & Substitutions

  • Ultra-light summer cream: Replace 1 tablespoon shea butter with coconut milk powder for a sorbet-soft finish
  • Gel-cream option: Blend in ¼ teaspoon xanthan gum dispersed in ice water before whipping; you'll get a pudding texture reminiscent of an ice cream mix fresh from an ice cream maker.
  • Scent twists: Add 5-10 drops of vanilla, bergamot or lilac syrup-inspired fragrance for a gourmand vibe.

How To Use

Scoop a marble-sized amount with clean fingers or a wooden spatula from the airtight container.

Warm between palms until it melts like heavy cream, then massage over face, body or hands.

For extra-dry areas, layer on damp skin straight after a shower-the oil-butter blend traps moisture the way cup milk enriches a batter.

Chill the large bowl of cream for 10 minutes in the refrigerator for a cooling after-sun mask.

FAQ's

Can I harvest lilacs from any garden?

Only use unsprayed lilac flowers; urban bushes can carry pollutants.

Is the recipe totally vegan?

Yes-use candelilla wax instead of beeswax and you'll have a 100 % plant-based lilac cream.

What is the shelf life of this lilac lotion?

3 months without preservatives; 6 + months with vitamin E or a broad-spectrum natural preservative, stored in a cool, dark place.

Texture feels grainy-why?

Butters cooled too slowly. Re-melt gently, then whip over an ice-water bath.

Can I colour it naturally?

Purple mica, beetroot powder or spirulina give a tint without staining skin.

Is it safe for sensitive skin?

Patch-test first; omit fragrance oils and mica, and keep the formula's natural ingredients simple.

Is it edible?

Despite the dessert-worthy scent, skip tasting-save lilac sugar, lilac syrup and whipped cream for the kitchen!
