I have been trying to perfect a recipe for homemade vegan burgers for so long! My poor family have tried their fair share of veggie burgers recipes that weren't up to scratch, but no more! These vegan sun-dried tomato and chickpea burgers are really easy to make, have a gentle sweet and spicy taste and hold up nice and firm so they are great for eating in burger buns. These easy chickpea patties are one of my favourite easy vegan recipes and I love that it is a healthy recipe too.
This is one of those great recipes where you just need to whiz everything up in the food processor. You can pulse it together to leave some texture or blitz it smooth if you have fussy children like mine! If you don't mind a bit of texture you can use a potato masher to mash the chickpeas and combine the rest of the ingredients.
I served these chickpea veggie burgers with chopped red onion, applewood smoked vegan cheese and chopped chillis in a fluffy white bun with a squeeze of vegan mayo. My salt and pepper wedges are the perfect accompaniment or try using sweet potatoes to make wedges. Of course you can use your favorite toppings too to make this homemade veggie burger truly your own!
Ingredients
- tinned chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
- garlic
- sun-dried tomatoes (from a jar)
- red onion
- gram flour (chickpea flour)
- green chilli
- paprika
- olive oil
- sea salt
- black pepper
See the recipe card for exact quantities.
The main ingredient is canned chickpeas which is a great source of plant-based protein for vegans but does need a bit of spicing up flavour-wise and this is where the sun-dried tomatoes come into play. Make sure that you use sun-dried tomatoes from a jar as we will be using the flavour filled oil in these burgers.
Instructions
- Chop the onion in the food processor.
- Add 100g of sun-dried tomatoes from a jar and half the oil in the jar too.
- Add the garlic, paprika and half a chilli and blitz again.
- Drain the tin of chickpeas, rinse and add them to the blender. Pulse until you reach the desired consistency and perfect texture.
- Transfer the patty mixture to a large bowl and mix through the gram flour, salt and pepper until the chickpea mixture becomes sticky enough to form patties.
- Use the extra flour to form the burgers into patty shapes.
- Heat the olive oil in a frying pan or large skillet and shallow fry the chickpea fritters in a bit of oil, on a medium heat for ten minutes on each side or until golden brown.
- For best results, finish cooking the burgers in the oven on a baking sheet for another 5-10 minutes to make sure that they are cooked through.
Top Tip: The vegan chickpea burgers should be a little sticky when they are put in the oil to cook and make sure that you don't overcook them so that they go dry.

Dietary requirements and variations
These burger patties are vegan, dairy free, egg free and gluten free. Serve with gluten-free buns for a gluten free meal.
You can mix up the flavours in these burgers too, add some extra chilli, fresh herbs such as fresh parsley or fresh cilantro (coriander) or chilli flakes or cayenne pepper for extra heat if you like that. If you prefer a more smoky flavor to your burger you can add a little bit of liquid smoke for an authentic BBQ taste. Try adding a bit of garlic powder or onion powder to as well to turn these into a wonderful mediterranean flavorful veggie burger. If you prefer slightly less spicy burgers you can replace the chillis with green onions or simply leave them out. The options really are endless.
Meal Prep
I like to make a large batch and then have a few in the fridge for when I might need easy weeknight meals later in the week. I also try to store some uncooked patties in the freezer for another day. I'm a huge fan of meal prep!
