I know that Jammy Dodgers are one of the nation's favourite biscuits and a real household classic - that delicious vanilla shortbread mixed with a lovely strawberry jam filling, what's not to love! In fact vegans can now buy your favourite Jammie Dodger biscuits off the shelf as they have had a recipe change and jammy dodgers are now vegan friendly, which is an exciting time for vegans looking for more vegan options.
But of course, I don't want to advocate buying mass produced here. I prefer to make our food from scratch, not only because then I know exactly what is going into what we are eating, but environmentally it means much less packaging waste. In my mind, nothing tastes better than my homemade version of this classic british biscuit - freshly baked homemade vegan jammy dodgers.
Why make your own Jammy Dodgers?
Like I said, it is easy to grab a packet of vegan jammy dodgers off the shelf now, but I like to avoid doing that where I can because I prefer to cook as much of our food from scratch as I can. If you take a look at the ingredients on many of these packaged products, the list is huge and I can't recognise many of the things on the list. When I make these, I know exactly what I am putting into them and they have no preservatives or palm oil or other nasties. If you are making these for allergy sufferers there is also no risk of cross contamination with allergens if you are making them yourself.
I have also been desperately trying to reduce our plastic waste. I buy as many products I can from our local zero waste shop, including flour, sugar, baking powder etc so I know that the packaging waste is much less when I bake these myself. I also have started using a reusable silicone baking mat so that I'm not wasting greaseproof paper each time I bake. It's definitely worth investing in, over time you will not only save money but be producing less waste. Invest in some quality metal cookie cutters of various shapes, including a round cutter.

Are these vegan jammy dodgers easy to make?
Believe it or not these vegan jammie dodgers are relatively easy to make and the whole family will enjoy this dairy-free recipe. The good news is that they are are also really fun to make, I love making them with my children, they really enjoy rolling the biscuit dough and cutting out the shapes. It's definitely a family fun activity for biscuit fans. If you are brave enough their favourite job is spreading the jam in the middle but be prepared for lots of sticky fingers!!
I usually use half of the mixture to make 8 biscuits and keep the other half of the dough in the fridge in a sealed container to make another fresh batch in a couple of days. The second bake is much easier and quicker as you don't have to make the mixture again.
Jammy dodger ingredients
This jammy dodgers recipe uses simple ingredients that most people will have in their store cupboard. You will need...
- plain flour
- dairy free butter
- vanilla extract
- caster sugar
- jam
For exact quantities see the recipe card below.

Instructions
- Pre heat the oven to 160° celcius / 140° for a fan oven.
- Cream together the butter, sugar and vanilla extract in a large bowl by beating with a wooden spoon or using a mixer for a couple of minutes.
- Sieve the flour and mix into the butter mixture until a dough is formed. It should just come together. If it doesn't you can add a tiny bit of water.
- Roll the dough into a smooth ball, wrap in cling film or put into an airtight container and leave in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
- Flour your work surface and roll the dough into a 4-5mm thickness.
- Use a cookie cutter to cut the bottom of the biscuit shapes. You can use any shape you like.
- Use the same cutter to cut the top of the biscuit shapes, and a smaller cutter to cut holes in the middle.
- Place on greaseproof paper on a baking tray or baking sheet and put into the oven for 12-15 minutes. The length of time they take to cook depends upon how big and thick they are so I would recommend checking them often. You want to take them out before they start to go golden brown.
- Leave to cool on a wire rack.
- When completely cool, spread a layer of jam on the bottom biscuit and sandwich together with a top biscuit. You now effectively have a jam sandwich in a biscuit form, with a heart shaped hole in the top layer.
- Dust with icing sugar to serve (optional)

Substitutions and variations
This jammie dodgers vegan recipe is egg free, dairy free, soya free, milk protein free and nut free and contains no animal products.
I wouldn't recommend changing the recipe much.
You can mix up the filling in the centre of the biscuit to be a bit different. Try a vegan chocolate spread or a different flavour jam.
You could replace some of the flour in the biscuit recipe for cocoa powder if you want to make chocolate shortbread.
You could replace some of the flour in the recipe for ground almonds and use cherry jam to make cherry bakewell flavoured dodgers!
You can of course cut these out into different shapes too. The UK's favourite jammie biscuit brand has circular biscuits with heart shaped holes in the middle.

FAQs
Which jam should I use in these jammie dodgers?
I prefer strawberry jam but truthfully any jam would work well. They are equally delicious with raspberry jam and still have that traditional look but you could use apricot, blackberry or cherry jam, anything that you fancy! Cherry jam would work very well at Christmas time I think and they would make perfect homemade vegan gifts for friends and family.
How long do these jammy dodgers take to cook?
I recommend putting them in the oven for 12-15 minutes but you will want to keep a close eye on them. Cooking time will vary slightly according to how big and thick your vegan biscuits are and you want to take them out of the oven before they turn brown.
How to store vegan jammy dodgers
These are best eaten on the day that they are made but they will keep for up to 3 days in an airtight container left at a cool temperature or room temperature.
Can I freeze vegan jammy dodgers?
You can freeze the dough for up to 4 weeks. I would double wrap it in clingfilm and place in an airtight container. Leave to defrost in the fridge overnight and roll and bake as normal once defrosted.
Make ahead tips
You can make a double batch of the dough and keep half in the fridge in an airtight bag or container for a couple of days or freeze it for later.
