These vegan chocolate flapjacks are chewy and a little crispy and full of the natural goodness of oats, almond butter, cacao powder  and chia seeds. They are free from butter and refined sugar so will solve that chocolate craving without giving you a sugar high. They are also a little more appealing to younger children than a granola bar!

I am a huge flapjack fan and these healthy chocolate flapjacks are one of my go to makes to keep in our cake dome on the kitchen counter. They are great for an afternoon pick me up with a cup of coffee or cup of tea. They are crunchier flapjacks rather than a chewy flapjack and one of the best things you will taste today if you make them!

Flapjacks are a real British classic and they are easy to pack for picnics or in lunchboxes and it's an extra bonus that they are full of goodness, with no refined sugar. I love making healthy, tasty snacks because it's such a joy to me to feed my children something that I know they will enjoy and is nutritious too. That way I never mind saying yes when they ask for a second helping!

We go on a lot of family walks and we always pack a snack and a flask of oat milk hot chocolate to drink at the halfway point. It gives us something to look forward to and time for the children to gain a bit of energy back! These vegan flapjacks are perfect for throwing in our backpack and enjoying on the beach or in the woods or wherever our adventures take us that day.

Ingredients

There is a reason that these are labelled a healthy flapjack - they don't contain any of the butter or sugar you find in regular flapjacks and they have plenty of protein in them from the almond butter, oats and chia seeds. If you are looking for a recipe for the healthiest flapjacks this would fit your bill because they are a great source of nutrients. They aren't the lowest in calories or fat - this isn't a low fat flapjack recipe - but they do contain healthier fats and pack a good protein punch too.

The chia seeds add so much to these flapjacks, in fact I try to add chia seeds to things where I can as they are a great source of protein and are high in anti-oxidants and Omega 3 fatty acids which are important for vegans to work into their diet. This chia flapjack recipe is full of nutrients and a great snack option.

It isn't often that you find a chocolate flapjack recipe without golden syrup - we use maple syrup here to sweeten the flapjacks, which is an unrefined sugar and also less sticky than golden syrup!

These flapjacks are vegan, dairy free, egg free and soya free. If you use gluten free oats and cacao powder  they are gluten free flapjacks too.

You will need:

  • almond butter
  • porridge oats
  • coconut oil
  • maple syrup
  • cacao powder
  • chia seeds
  • vegan dark chocolate (for optional topping)

For exact quantities see the recipe card below.

You can top these chocolate flapjacks with a drizzle of melted chocolate to make them more decadent which I might do if I was taking these to a coffee date at a friends as topping these flapjacks with chocolate makes them look more aesthetically pleasing. However I don't usually find that they need it taste wise, and the chocolate melts in little hands and makes a mess anyway!

Instructions

These 7 ingredient chocolate flapjacks are really simple to make, just follow the simple steps below....

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius.
  2. Prepare a 9x9 square tin with parchment paper or use a silicone cake pan.
  3. Melt the coconut oil, almond butter and maple syrup together in a saucepan over a gentle heat.
  4. Mix together the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and add the melted syrup mixture to the large bowl. Stir to completely combine. The mixture should be sticky enough to stick together, if it is too dry add a splash of water.
  5. Press the flapjack mixture into a 9 x 9 prepared tin and press down firmly.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven before removing from the oven and leaving in the square baking tin to cool completely.
  7. Melt the chocolate for the topping by placing it in a heatproof bowl above a saucepan of boiling water.
  8. Drizzle the chocolate on top of the flapjacks and smooth over with the back of a spoon if you like to create a top layer of chocolate topping (optional).
  9. Cut the flapjacks into 9 squares and enjoy!

Substitutions and variations

  1. Nutty Delight: Add a variety of nuts chopped into small pieces such as almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts to the mixture to give the flapjacks a crunchy texture and a nutty flavor.
  2. Fruity Fusion: Mix in dried fruits like cranberries, apricots, or raisins to add natural sweetness and a burst of fruity taste to the flapjacks.
  3. Coconut Dream: Enhance the coconut flavor by incorporating shredded coconut into the mixture or sprinkling it on top before baking.
  4. Super Seeds: Boost the nutritional profile by adding a mix of seeds like chia seeds, flaxseeds, and pumpkin seeds, providing a dose of healthy fats and fiber.
  5. Orange Zest: For a citrusy twist, grate some orange zest into the mixture to add a refreshing note to the chocolatey goodness.
  6. Cinnamon Spice: Mix ground cinnamon into the recipe to infuse the flapjacks with a warm and aromatic flavor.
  7. Espresso Kick: If you love coffee, dissolve a teaspoon of instant coffee granules in a little hot water and add it to the wet ingredients for a mocha-flavored treat.
  8. Peanut Butter Power: Swirl in some peanut butter into the mixture for a rich and indulgent variation.
  9. Dark Chocolate Chunks: Chop some dark chocolate into small chunks and fold them into the mixture for pockets of melty chocolate goodness. You could also do the same with vegan white chocolate or vegan milk chocolate or use dark chocolate chips to make chocolate chip flapjacks.
  10. Protein Boost: Incorporate a scoop of vegan protein powder into the mixture to turn these flapjacks into a protein-rich snack.

Remember to adjust the amount of wet ingredients slightly if you add more dry ingredients to maintain the right consistency. The baking time may also vary depending on the additions you make, so keep an eye on the flapjacks while they are in the oven.

Enjoy experimenting with these variations and create your own signature healthy chocolate flapjacks!

FAQs

Is this a low fat flapjack recipe?

This recipe isn't low in fat but the fats it does contain are 'healthier' versions from the coconut oil and almond butter.

Can I use cocoa powder instead of cacao powder in this chocolate flapjacks recipe?

Yes you can, just use twice as much as cacao powder is stronger.

How long do they keep for?

They keep for about 5 days in an airtight container in a cool place.

Can you freeze these dark chocolate flapjacks?

These flapjacks hold up very well to freezing. Separate them with greaseproof paper or cling film and place in a box in the freezer for up to 3 months. Defrost at room temperature.
