If you're after red velvet martinis without the booze, this is the one. Think creamy, chocolatey, tangy-sweet, and ridiculously pretty in a chilled martini glass - basically made for Valentine's Day, special occasions, or anytime you want a dessert cocktail vibe without alcohol.

What you'll need

The "red velvet" flavour is all about a light cocoa + vanilla combo with a creamy base, and the colour comes naturally from cranberry juice (with the option of a couple of drops of red food coloring if you want it brighter). Everything here is easy to grab from a regular grocery store.

A clear glass mug with red liquid, a metal measuring jug with milk, a metal measuring spoon with honey, and a metal tablespoon with cocoa powder on a light textured surface.

You will need...

  • cranberry juice
  • cocoa powder
  • vanilla syrup (or simple syrup)
  • vanilla extract
  • non-dairy milk
  • Ice cubes
  • Dairy-free whipped cream (for garnish)
  • Red sprinkles or cocoa powder (optional, for garnish)

For exact quantities see the recipe card below.

A few quick notes:

  • Milk: use your favourite unsweetened non-dairy milk (oat is extra creamy; soya is higher protein).
  • Syrup: vanilla syrup or simple syrup both work - just make sure it's vegan (most are).
  • Garnishes: dairy-free whipped cream gives that classic "red velvet cupcakes" vibe, and red sanding sugar or red sprinkles take the visual appeal up a notch.

Instructions

A blender contains a mixture of red liquid and brown cocoa powder, viewed from above. A white cloth with red stripes is beside the blender.

Prepare the base: In a blender, combine the cranberry juice, cocoa powder, vanilla syrup, vanilla extract , and milk. Blend until smooth.

Chill: Pour the mixture into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well to chill the drink (a good shake helps it get frothy).

Red liquid being poured from a glass container into a glass with ice cubes, with another glass containing the same red liquid and ice nearby. Both glasses have sugared rims.
Red cocktail being poured over ice cubes into a sugar-rimmed glass on a light, textured surface.

Serve: Strain mixture into two martini glasses.

Garnish: Top each glass with a dollop of vegan whipped cream and sprinkle with red sprinkles or lightly dust with cocoa powder. Serve immediately.

Variations and substitutions (including cocktail options)

These are optional add-ons, so you can keep the base drink recipe exactly as-is and still make it feel "next level":

  • Brighter red velvet colour: Add 1-3 drops of red food coloring before blending (especially if your cranberry juice is pale).
  • Rim the glass: Dip the rim of your martini glass in simple syrup, then in red sanding sugar. Or for a "cream cheese" vibe, swipe a thin layer of dairy-free cream cheese frosting around the rim and dip into red velvet cake crumbs.
  • More "cake" flavour: Add a pinch of salt and an extra splash of vanilla (great if you want that red velvet cake martini feel).
  • Make it richer: Swap part of the milk for a splash of coconut cream (your vegan "heavy cream" moment).
  • Turn it into a cocktail (adults only): Add plain vodka for a classic martini-style kick. For a red velvet espresso martini vibe, add a shot of cooled espresso plus coffee liqueur and a little chocolate liqueur. Some recipes use Bailey's Red Velvet / Irish cream liqueur and even hazelnut liqueurs-those make delicious red velvet martinis, but they're not vegan unless you use a dairy-free alternative.

Serving suggestions

For parties (Christmas Eve included), batch the blended mixture ahead and keep it chilled-then shake each serving with ice right before pouring.

Perfect as Valentine's Day or valentines day cocktails (without alcohol), especially with chocolate strawberries or a slice of vegan chocolate cake.

Serve alongside mini red velvet cupcakes for a themed dessert spread.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop cocoa powder clumping?

Blend first, then shake. If you still see tiny specks, strain mixture through a fine mesh strainer.

Can I make red velvet martinis ahead of time?

Yes-blend the base and chill it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Shake with ice right before serving so it's cold and frothy.

Do I need a cocktail shaker?

It helps a lot (texture + chill). No shaker? Use a jar with a tight lid and shake carefully.

What's the best milk for this mocktail?

Oat milk gives the creamiest finish. Soya is great if you want more protein. Almond is lighter.

How can I make it look extra fancy for photos?

Use a chilled martini glass, add a red sanding sugar rim, and finish with whipped cream plus a dusting of cocoa. A sprinkle of red velvet cake crumbs looks gorgeous too.

These red velvet martinis are creamy, chocolatey, and made for showing off-without needing alcohol to feel special. Keep them simple for a quick drink recipe, or dress them up with a cream-cheese-style rim and red velvet cake crumbs for full dessert cocktail energy. If you make these red velvet martinis for Valentine's Day, don't forget the sprinkles.
