If you want a breakfast that looks like you tried really hard (but actually takes 15 minutes), this nutella toast is it. Think warm, chocolatey spread, juicy strawberries and raspberries, and a little powdered sugar "wow" on top.
Ingredients
These are all easy to grab at the grocery store, and you can use whatever bread you already have. This recipe works with white, whole wheat, or brioche slices of bread-brioche is the most "treat yourself" option, but any sturdy bread will do.
You will need:
- bread
- vegan chocolate hazelnut spread
- fresh strawberries
- icing sugar (powdered sugar)
For exact quantities see the recipe card below.
Vegan "Nutella" options
- UK: Nutella Plant-Based is now a thing (and it's designed to feel like the classic).
You'll also spot options like M&S Plant Kitchen Hazelnut Chocolate Spread, Bett'r Hazelnut Cocoa Cream or if you have a nut allergy you can even use chocolate sunflower seed butter. - If you can't find a plant-based Nutella-style jar locally, look for "dairy-free chocolate hazelnut spread" labels-many brands now make them (often in the peanut butter aisle or with specialty spreads).
Quick nutrition note: berries add fibre + vitamin C, and using whole wheat bread is an easy boost if you want it a bit more filling.
Full instructions
Prep the fruit.
Wash and hull the strawberries, then slice them into thin rounds.
Toast the bread.
Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast the slices of bread until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Or use a regular toaster.
Use a heart shaped cutter to cut each slice into a heart. (No cutter? Use a small knife and trim into a heart-still cute.)
Spread the chocolate hazelnut spread in a generous layer over one heart. If yours is thick, make warm nutella by microwaving the spread for 5-10 seconds or warming it slightly so it glides on with ease.
Top with berries.
Arrange the strawberries and raspberries evenly on top.
Finish with powdered sugar.
Dust with powdered sugar using a fine sieve.
Serve.
Slice in half if you like and serve straight away (extra berries on the side is always a bonus!)

Heart Shaped Strawberry & Nutella Toast Recipe
- Total Time: 15 minutes
- Yield: 2 servings 1x
- Diet: Vegan
Description
Heart-shaped nutella toast with berries and powdered sugar-15 minutes, vegan-friendly, and Valentine-perfect.
Ingredients
2 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or brioche)
2 tablespoons vegan chocolate hazelnut spread (Nutella-style)
½ cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
½ cup fresh raspberries
Powdered sugar (icing sugar) for dusting
Instructions
Prep the fruit.
Wash and hull the strawberries, then slice them into thin rounds.
Toast the bread.
Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast the slices of bread until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Cut heart shapes.
Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut each slice into a heart.
Serve.
Slice in half if you like and serve straight away (extra berries on the side is always a bonus)
Notes
If you want a smoother, glossier finish, slightly warming the spread first is a better way to get an even layer.
Delicious Variations of Nutella Toast & Possible Substitutions
- Thicker layer: If you're a "more is more" person, you can go for a 3-5 tablespoon nutella coating across both hearts (especially if your slices are large).
- Peanut butter swirl: Add a drizzle of peanut butter over the chocolate spread before the fruit.
- Strawberry-only: Skip raspberries and pile on more strawberries for a simpler look.
- "Bruschetta" style: Add a thin layer of vegan cream cheese first, then spread, then fruit (this is popular in berry-bruschetta versions).
- Cinnamon sugar finish: Mix a ¼ teaspoon cinnamon with powdered sugar and dust that over the top for a warmer flavour.
French toast inspired versions (if you want to level it up):
Some of the most popular related recipes are nutella french toast and heart-shaped stuffed versions. They usually involve an egg mixture (often large eggs, milk, and sometimes vanilla extract) dipped in a shallow bowl, then fried until golden.
To keep it vegan, swap eggs for a plant-based batter (like plant milk + flour/cornflour + vanilla + cinnamon), then cook the bread hearts and fill like nutella sandwiches.
(And if you've ever seen nutella stuffed french toast sticks on TikTok-same idea, just cut into strips before dipping and frying.)
Serving suggestions
- With hot coffee, tea, or a strawberry smoothie.
- As a Valentine breakfast board with extra berries, banana slices, and a little pot of extra spread for dipping.
- For kids: serve as mini hearts (use a smaller cutter) and let them decorate their own.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make this ahead of time?
It's best fresh. Once the fruit sits on top, the toast can soften. If you need a head start, prep the berries and cut the hearts, then assemble right before serving.
How do I stop the bread tearing when I spread it?
Toast it a little more, then slightly warm the spread so it's soft and spreadable (warm nutella makes a huge difference).
What bread works best?
Brioche is the most dessert-like, whole wheat feels more "breakfast," and white bread is the classic. Use thicker slices of bread if you can.
Is Nutella vegan?
Classic Nutella contains milk, but there are plant-based chocolate hazelnut spreads available now, including Nutella Plant-Based in the UK.
Can I turn this into a bigger brunch recipe?
Yes-make a vegan "French toast" version using a spiced batter and cook until golden, then fill and top with nutella and berries (that's the vibe behind most nutella french toast recipes). Check out this Cinnamon Toast recipe for inspiration.
This heart-shaped nutella toast is quick, pretty, and genuinely delicious-perfect for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day breakfast, or just a random Tuesday when you want something cute. Keep it simple with berries and powdered sugar, or add your favourite spread extras like peanut butter or a cinnamon sugar dusting.
