There's nothing quite like the comforting aroma of freshly made waffles-especially when they're rich in chocolate flavor and high in protein with x grams of protein per serving of 2 waffles! Our Easy Vegan Dark Chocolate Protein Waffles are the perfect way to start your day, combining wholesome, simple ingredients into a deliciously fluffy and indulgent breakfast treat. Whether you're fueling up after a morning workout or looking for a sweet weekend brunch option, these waffles strike the ideal balance between taste and nutrition.

In this recipe, we've infused classic waffle batter with a decadent dose of dark cocoa and plant-based protein to keep you satisfied and energized. Even better, they're totally egg-free and dairy-free, relying on staple vegan ingredients like non-dairy milk and a vegan-friendly protein powder. You'll still get that crisp outer layer and light, fluffy interior-just with a wholesome twist.

Top these chocolate waffles with fresh fruit, a drizzle of pure maple syrup, or a dollop of your favorite non-dairy yogurt to elevate their chocolatey goodness. Get ready to wow your taste buds and kick off your morning on a sweet, protein-packed note!

Ingredients

These waffles feature a blend of easily accessible pantry staples and nutrient-dense vegan ingredients. Plain flour and baking powder create the essential fluffy base, while chocolate protein powder and cacao powder provide a satisfying boost of protein and antioxidants. Oat milk is a creamy, dairy-free option that can be found in most supermarkets, and the mix of ground flaxseeds and water works as an egg replacement while adding fiber and beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. The soft brown sugar supplies just the right amount of sweetness, and vegetable oil ensures a tender, moist texture. Altogether, these ingredients come together simply, requiring no specialty store hunts, and deliver a hearty, chocolatey waffle that's as wholesome as it is delicious.

Ingredients on a wooden board: plant-based milk, maple syrup, oil in a heart-shaped bowl, a bowl of flour, ground flaxseed, whole wheat flour, and brown sugar.

You will need...

  • 240g plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 75g chocolate protein powder
  • 50g cacao powder
  • 500ml oat milk
  • 2 tablespoon ground flaxseeds in 5 tablespoon water
  • 6 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 50g soft brown sugar

For exact quantities see the recipe card below...

Instructions

A glass bowl containing a frothy mixture of yeast and water on a wooden surface.

In a small bowl, mix the ground flaxseed with the water. Set aside to thicken.

In a separate bowl, combine the oat milk and apple cider vinegar. Set this aside as well-it will begin to curdle slightly.

A clear glass mug filled with milk sits on a marble countertop, beside a plate of dark chocolate protein waffles, against a blurred gray geometric patterned background.
A whisk rests in a bowl filled with dry cocoa powder and flour mixture.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, chocolate protein powder, cacao powder, and brown sugar).

Add the wet ingredients - the thickened flax mixture, the curdled milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Stir everything together until just combined-avoid overmixing.

A bowl of chocolate batter being mixed with a whisk.
Chocolate waffle batter spread on a double waffle iron, ready to be cooked.

Lightly grease or oil your waffle maker or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Spoon the batter onto the preheated waffle maker, cooking in batches according to your waffle maker's instructions.

Serve the cooked waffles warm with your favorite toppings. Enjoy!

Top tip: Make sure that you have a preheated waffle iron - I plug mine in to pre-heat as I am starting to make the waffle batter.

Substitutions and Variations

One of the best parts about these vegan chocolate protein waffles is how adaptable they are for the whole family. If you're out of plain flour, consider swapping in whole wheat flour for a slightly heartier bite, or use a gluten-free blend if you're gluten-intolerant. You can also substitute the chocolate protein powder with another plant-based protein-like vanilla or unflavored-and simply adjust the sweetener or cacao powder to keep that chocolatey goodness.

If you don't have ground flaxseeds you can replace these for chia seeds - use the same measurements to make a chia egg instead of a flax egg.

Feel free to switch oat milk for almond, soy milk, or coconut milk depending on your preference. If you'd like a different sweetener, try coconut sugar, maple syrup, or date syrup to cut back on refined sugar. You can replace vegetable oil with melted coconut oil or avocado oil for a different flavor profile and healthy fats. For a fun twist and extra sweet treats, stir in dairy-free chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or a dash of cinnamon to jazz up the batter. And if you love the tangy note from apple cider vinegar, lemon juice makes a good alternative. The possibilities are endless-so don't be afraid to get creative!

Serving suggestions

  1. Drizzle of Nut Butter
Warm up some creamy peanut butter or almond butter and drizzle it over your waffles for a rich, nutty topping with extra protein. Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt or cacao nibs on top for an extra flavor boost.
  2. Vegan Greek Yogurt & Fresh Berries
Dollop a scoop of vegan Greek yogurt onto your waffle, then scatter a handful of fresh berries-like strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries-for a bright and tangy contrast. The vegan green yoghurt will also increase the protein content of this meal.
  3. Maple Syrup & Banana Slices
Keep it classic with a pour of pure maple syrup and some sliced bananas. Add a sprinkle of chopped nuts for a crunchy finishing touch.
  4. Chocolate Lover's Delight
Double up on the chocolate by adding a drizzle of vegan chocolate syrup and a few dairy-free chocolate chips. Consider a side of fresh fruit to balance out the sweetness.
  5. Savory-Sweet Combo
Pair your waffles with a breakfast scramble made from tofu or chickpeas on the side. The waffles' chocolatey flavor complements the savory scramble, creating a delicious balance.

FAQ's

Can I make these waffles gluten-free?

Absolutely! Simply replace the plain flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Most store-bought blends work well, but be sure to check the package instructions for best results.

How can I sweeten these waffles without refined sugar?

You can substitute soft brown sugar with coconut sugar, pure maple syrup, or date syrup. Each option offers a slightly different flavor, so choose one that suits your taste preferences.

Are these waffles high in protein?

Yes. Thanks to the protein powder and flaxseeds, these waffles provide a moderate protein boost-perfect if you're looking to enjoy a sweet treat without sacrificing your protein goals.

Can I freeze these waffles for later?

Definitely. Make an extra batch, let them cool, and store leftover waffles in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to a month. Reheat in your toaster or oven for a quick, hassle-free breakfast.

How do I get my waffles to turn out extra crispy?

For crispier edges, lightly spray or brush your waffle iron with oil before cooking, and leave the waffles in a bit longer. If you prefer them softer, simply reduce the cooking time.
