This chocolate mousse is deliciously creamy and you will have no idea that it is made with avocados as a main ingredient as the avocado flavor is masked completely by the deep chocolate flavor and vanilla. It makes a delicious avocado pudding, which is full of healthy fats and the perfect vegan chocolate pudding alternative to traditional mousse.
This recipe is one of my go-to sweet recipes if I have a chocolate craving as it is rich and creamy but also reasonably healthy due to the healthy ingredients.
Ingredients
You will need a few very simple ingredients to make this vegan avocado chocolate pudding. Most of them you will have in your cupboards already, so if you find yourself with two ripe avocados you know just what to do with them!

- ripe avocados
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- dark chocolate chips
- non-dairy milk of choice
- vanilla extract
- sae salt / himalayan salt
- pure maple syrup
For exact quantities see the recipe card below.
Instructions

Gather and measure your ingredients. Melt the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl over a pan of boiling water.
Scoop out the flesh of the avocados and add to a blender or food processor with the melted chocolate and the rest of the ingredients. Blend until smooth and it has a creamy texture.

Divide between ramekins and leave to set in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
Top tip: You will need to make sure that your avocados are ripe - if they are not quite ripe your mousse will be lumpy.

Variations and Substitutions
There isn't much that you can do to vary this healthy chocolate mousse recipe as it is a simple recipe that won't take much messing with.
You could add chilli flakes to make it a chilli chocolate mousse or replace the milk with espresso for a chocolate / coffee flavour. You could even add a tiny bit of ginger puree for a chocolate ginger dessert.
Most non-dairy milks work well in this chocolate avocado pudding, I prefer soya, oat or coconut milk myself.
You can use a different sweetener if you don't have maple syrup. Try agave syrup or even date syrup, although you might need to adjust the quantities.
You can use raw cacao powder instead of cocoa powder - you will just need to use a little less, and adjust the amount of milk accordingly.
How to serve vegan chocolate mousse
You can serve this on its own or with a dollop of vegan whipped cream. I sprinkle vegan sprinkles on the top or add chopped banana, sliced strawberries or fresh berries for the children to enjoy as a dessert. You can also use it to make the topping for an easy vegan cheesecake using a crushed digestive biscuit and melted butter base. Essentially you can serve it any way you would serve traditional chocolate mousse - dress it up as a decadent dessert or serve it in bowls for the children!
FAQ's
How do I store this mousse?
Keep this chocolate mousse in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. It is not suitable for freezing.
How long does this mousse keep for?
This creamy mousse keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days. The avocado of course turns brown but that is disguised by the colour of the chocolate, just as the avocado taste is disguised by the chocolate flavor. Just give it a good mix before serving.
Can I use a different sweetener?
You can use a different liquid sweetener if you don't have maple syrup. Try agave syrup or even date syrup, although you might need to adjust the quantities.
What non-dairy milk is best?
Most non-dairy milks work well in this recipe, I prefer soy milk, oat milk or coconut milk but unsweetened almond milk also works well.
