If you're making vegan chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine's Day, this is the easiest way to get that glossy dark chocolate coating with thin white chocolate piping (just like the gift-box style vegan chocolate covered strawberries you see everywhere). They look fancy, but it's really just fresh strawberries + melted chocolate + a quick drizzle of vegan chocolate covered strawberries.

These vegan chocolate covered strawberries are a perfect dessert for a special occasion, a sweet treat for your sweet tooth, or one of those homemade gifts that feels genuinely thoughtful without being complicated. Serve these delightful vegan chocolate covered strawberries at your next gathering.

Ingredients (and why they're easy to find)

You only need simple ingredients, and most are easy to grab at any grocery store. The biggest "hunt" can be vegan white chocolate, but you can use vegan white chocolate chips or a vegan white chocolate bar chopped up (both work well for a white chocolate drizzle).

Strawberries bring fibre, vitamin C, and a bright, fresh contrast to the rich chocolate. For best results, choose ripe strawberries that are bright red and fragrant-ripest strawberries taste sweetest and make the best vegan chocolate strawberries.

Bowl of fresh strawberries, bowls of dark and vegan chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, coconut oil, melted chocolate, baking paper, and a piping bag on a marble surface—perfect for making vegan chocolate covered strawberries.

You will need...

  • fresh strawberries (organic strawberries if you like), with leaves on
  • dairy-free chocolate (dark chocolate chips, vegan chocolate chips, or chopped chocolate bars)
  • coconut oil (optional, helps a smoother chocolate mixture and easier dipping)
  • vegan white chocolate (vegan white chocolate chips or chopped bar)
  • food colouring (only if your vegan white chocolate is colouring-safe and you want a tinted drizzle)
  • Optional toppings (great options)
    • Edible glitter
    • Coconut flakes
    • A dusting of cacao powder
    • Crushed nuts, freeze-dried berries, or sprinkles (check vegan-friendly)
    • Peanut butter (for a quick drizzle or filling idea)

For exact quantities see the recipe card below.

Equipment

  • Paper towel or kitchen towels
  • Baking sheet or baking tray
  • Parchment paper or wax paper
  • Microwave-safe bowl (a glass bowl works well) or a heatproof bowl
  • Spoon/spatula
  • Piping bag, sandwich bag, or a fork for drizzling

Instructions (dark chocolate dip + thin white chocolate piping)

A hand uses a white cloth to wipe fresh strawberries arranged in rows on a white surface, perfect for making chocolate covered strawberries or a vegan dessert.

1) Prep the strawberries properly

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or wax paper) and keep it nearby.

Wash strawberries in cold water, then drain well.

Dry strawberries completely using paper towel/kitchen towels. This matters: wet berries (even tiny droplets) can make chocolate seize or slide off.

Leave them to air-dry for 10-15 minutes so you're working with dry strawberries. Avoid direct sunlight while they dry.

Tip: If your strawberries are fridge-cold, let them sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes first. Very cold fruit can cause condensation, which leads to patchy chocolate coating.

A hand stirs melted vegan chocolate with a spoon in a clear glass bowl on a grey surface, perfect for making chocolate-covered strawberries or your favourite vegan dessert.

2) Melt the dark chocolate (microwave method)

If using, stir in the little coconut oil to make the chocolate mixture glossy and fluid.

Add dark chocolate chips (or chopped dairy-free chocolate bars) to a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave in second increments: start with 30 seconds, then stir well (scrape the bottom of the bowl).

Continue heating in 15-20 second increments, stirring each time, until you have melted dark chocolate that's smooth. Don't rush it.

A hand dips a fresh strawberry into a glass bowl of melted vegan chocolate on a marble surface, creating the perfect vegan dessert.

3) Dip the strawberries

Place on the lined tray in a single layer.

Hold each strawberry by the leaves and dip, swirling to coat. Aim to cover most of the berry, leaving a little red at the top of the berry for that classic look.

Lift it out and let excess chocolate drip back into the bowl (this helps avoid a puddle at the bottom).

Gently scrape the bottom edge against the rim to remove excess chocolate.

Three strawberries dipped in vegan chocolate are arranged in a row on a greaseproof paper-lined baking tray, creating an irresistible vegan dessert.

Repeat until you've dipped them all. If you have leftover chocolate, save it for a drizzle or stir it into oats or yoghurt later.

A hand pipes white chocolate into a small glass bowl, with vegan chocolate covered strawberries drizzled with white chocolate in the background.

4) Melt the vegan white chocolate

Stir in a touch of coconut oil if it's thick-this helps you get thin lines.

Add vegan white chocolate chips (or chopped bar) to a clean microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave in short second increments (10-15 seconds), stirring each time, until smooth.

Large chocolate covered strawberries, drizzled with white chocolate, are arranged in white paper cups on a tray-perfect for anyone craving a sweet treat.

5) Pipe the white chocolate drizzle

Let set at room temperature until firm.

Spoon the white chocolate into a piping bag (or a sandwich bag) and snip a tiny corner.

Drizzle back-and-forth over the top of each strawberry in quick, light passes to get thin piping lines (not thick ribbons).

If your kitchen is warm, pop the tray into the fridge for 10-15 minutes to set, but don't leave them there too long uncovered (condensation can happen when you bring them back out).

Double boiler method (water bath option)

If you prefer a gentler melt for the chocolate, the double boiler method works well for melting the vegan chocolate covered strawberries. It prevents overheating, ensuring your vegan chocolate covered strawberries maintain their rich flavour and texture.

  1. Fill a small pot with a little water and bring it to a low simmer.
  2. Place a heatproof bowl on top (bottom of the bowl should not touch the water).
  3. Add chocolate and stir until melted and smooth.
Keep steam away from the chocolate-water + chocolate is a recipe for seizing.

Extra tips for best results (the bits people often miss)

  • Dry strawberries means dry. One damp spot = streaky chocolate coating.
  • Don't overheat chocolate. Low and slow gives a smoother, richer chocolate finish.
  • If the chocolate thickens while dipping, keep the bowl over a warm water bath for a minute, or microwave for 5-8 seconds and stir.
  • For cleaner lines, drizzle when the dark chocolate is set (not wet).
  • For gifting: place each berry in a cupcake liner and arrange in a gift box. Keep_toggle heat away and avoid direct sunlight.

Variations and substitutions

  • No vegan white chocolate? Use additional melted chocolate (dark) for a tone-on-tone drizzle.
  • "Pink" Valentine's drizzle: use a small amount of vegan-friendly food coloring in the white chocolate (only if it won't cause the chocolate to seize).
  • Crunchy finish: sprinkle coconut flakes, chopped nuts, or cacao powder before the chocolate sets.
  • Peanut butter upgrade: drizzle peanut butter over set chocolate, or dip the top of each strawberry in peanut butter first, chill briefly, then dip in chocolate.
  • Allergy-friendly: choose non-dairy chocolate chips made in a dedicated facility if you're catering for dairy allergies.

Serving suggestions

  • Serve on a platter with a cup of coffee after dinner.
  • Add to a dessert board with grapes, pretzels, and sliced oranges.
  • Make them an edible gift: line a box, add parchment paper, and separate layers carefully.

Storage

These are best the day you make them (that fresh strawberry texture is everything). If you need to store:

  • Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
  • Line the bottom of the container with paper towel to absorb moisture, and avoid stacking (or use cupcake liners).
  • Let them sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't the chocolate stick?

Usually the strawberries weren't fully dry. Pat dry with paper towel and let them air-dry until there's zero moisture.

Why did my chocolate go grainy?

A little water/steam got in, or it overheated. Use a dry bowl, stir often, and heat in short increments.

Can I freeze vegan chocolate-covered strawberries?

I don't recommend it. Freezing changes the berry texture and can cause weeping when thawed.

What are the best vegan chocolate options?

Use what you love and what melts smoothly: vegan chocolate chips, non-dairy chocolate chips, or a good dairy-free chocolate bar. I use these chocolate chips in most recipes.

How do I get thin white chocolate drizzle lines?

Make sure the white chocolate is fully melted and fluid, use a tiny snip on the bag, and drizzle quickly over the top of each strawberry.
