My little people love jam on toast for breakfast, swirled in their yoghurt or topping their porridge in the morning. Unfortunately traditional jam is very high in sugar which isn't so great for their health (or their teeth). We had a glut of wild blackberries we picked this year that we foraged from the local blackberry bushes and last year I made jam with the surplus, but this year I decided to make chia blackberry jam instead as it has a significantly smaller amount of sugar. It is a really easy jam recipe - easier than regular homemade jam and is a beautiful colour and texture and tastes really great too - it was a hit with my children and that's saying something!
If you are into eating seasonally then this should be made when blackberries are ripe for picking - late summer / early autumn. We have lots growing in the countryside around where we live and the children love spending an afternoon blackberry picking, it is a really simple joy that they genuinely enjoy. So at the end of summer I am always looking for new recipes to try to use up all the blackberries they come home with!

Ingredients
You only need four ingredients to make this blackberry chia jam, it really is that simple. It contains no refined sugar as it is naturally sweetened with maple syrup.
You will need...
- Blackberries
- Chia seeds
- Vanilla extract
- Maple syrup
See recipe card for quantities.
Blackberries are full of vitamins and antioxidants so they make an excellent addition to your diet. Chia seeds are also a great food. They may just be little seeds but they contain large amounts of fibre and omega-3 fatty acids, plenty of high quality protein, and several essential minerals and antioxidants. This is a much better alternative to sugary jam and processed store-bought jams!

Instructions
Heat the blackberries in a heavy bottomed saucepan on a medium heat for a few minutes, giving it a good stir often. When they start to soften, mash them with the back of a wooden spoon or use a potato masher. Add the maple syrup and vanilla extract and continue to cook on a medium-high heat until nice and soft. Turn off the heat and stir through the chia seeds. Leave to cool. The mixture should thicken nicely as it cools and become a jam like consistency. That's it - it really is an easy recipe! Pour into a sterilised jar or pot with a lid and keep in the fridge - you can enjoy this good thing all week for breakfast on toast, swirled through yoghurt or dolloped on ice cream!

Hint: This is where you can decide how textured you want your jam. Mash it more for a smoother texture or mash it just a little bit to leave some juice blackberry chunks in there.
Variations
You can make chia seed jam with other fruits like strawberries and raspberries. Keep a look out on here for more recipes coming soon!
Equipment
You need very little equipment to make this homemade blackberry jam. You will need a saucepan and a wooden spoon, and if desired a potato masher. You will also want to use a sterilised jar to store your jam.
Storage
This chia seed jam will keep in the fridge in an airtight container like a jam jar or mason jar for about a week. It doesn't keep for a long time like traditional jam, but make a batch a week for your family and mix up the flavours every week by using different fresh fruit.
Top tip
You can make this recipe using frozen blackberries instead of fresh berries but the frozen berries will take a little longer to cook down than fresh blackberries. So if you have a whole tonne of blackberries this blackberry season, don't be afraid to freeze some and use them to make this chia blackberry jam at a later date.

How to sterilise a jar
It is easy to sterilise a jar to keep jam in - you just need to run it through a hot dishwasher or pop it in the oven. If you haven't sterilised a jar before, here is a great post with lots of ways that you can sterilise a glass jam jar.
Is chia seed jam better for you than traditional jams?
Definitely yes. Chia seeds are full of protein and nutrients and chia seed jam has not nearly as much sugar than traditional jams. It contains whole foods so can be considered a healthy jam in that regard.
How to use chia seed jam
There are so many uses for this delicious jam - you could spoon it over ice cream, have it on toast or in rice pudding. You can drizzle it onto vegan french toast, spread it on vegan croissants or swirl it through vegan yoghurt.
