I'm not a big fan of huge breakfasts in the morning so on weekdays quite often I will alternate between green smoothies, red smoothies or a plant protein shake. They are easy and quick to make and full of goodness from whole foods which sets me up for the day. This vegan chocolate protein shake tastes so good you don't even know that it's good for you. Of course you don't have to drink this for breakfast as a meal replacement, it would also be great as a post workout drink too. Of course the high protein content of this will depend upon which milk you use and which protein powder. Using Oatly Barista milk and pea protein powder I get about 16g of protein per shake which really helps me meet my daily requirements. I am mindful of my protein intake because of my vegan diet. You could of course use another plant based milk such as hemp milk or soy milk.
I have Vitamix blender which is perfect for making smoothies and protein shakes. It is pricey and I have coveted one for a long, long time but it is definitely worth it. Before this I had a Nutribullet and NutriNinja which both do the job too.
I usually make a double batch so that I can keep some for the next day. This recipe makes two 300ml servings so it's perfect for a couple or to make extra to save for the next day. Just pop any extra into a cup with a lid and keep in the fridge. This shake is made of simple ingredients which I always keep stocked so I can make this whenever I want so I can enjoy a healthy breakfast even when I'm in a rush.
Health benefits of homemade vegan chocolate protein smoothie
This vegan chocolate protein shake uses whole food and natural ingredients, avoiding artificial colors, artificial flavors, and preservatives commonly found in non-vegan options. Vegan chocolate protein shakes can be a good source of healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids, when fortified with ingredients like flaxseed or chia seeds. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for brain health, heart health, and reducing inflammation.

It really couldn't be simpler to make this vegan protein smoothie - just measure all the ingredients into the jug of the bender and blitz until smooth and combined. It really is a very easy recipe!
It really is as simple as that - stick everything in the blender and blitz. You can try it in a blender bottle or shaker cup but I like the smoothness and froth you get when it is made in a blender.

Variations and substitutions
This chocolate smoothie recipe is naturally vegan, dairy free, egg free, soya free and gluten free depending upon which protein powder you use. It also has no added sugar and all the sweetness comes from the vanilla extract and the date syrup. This makes it in my opinion one of the best vegan protein shakes ever! It certainly is a delicious way to increase muscle mass and is the perfect post good workout shake.
Feel free to mix up the ingredients here. You can use a variety of non-dairy milk such as coconut milk, soy milk or almond milk as well as different flavour plant-based protein powders - just try to make sure you use one with natural flavors. Vanilla protein powder works well or you could use chocolate protein powder if you prefer a stronger chocolate flavor. If you like the taste of chocolate and banana why not add a banana to the mix. You can also add a brazil nut to the recipe to provide you with valuable selenium or throw in half an avocado for a creamy texture and added healthy fats. Swap the almond butter for peanut butter if you want to mix up the flavour.
You can use cocoa powder in place of cacao powder if you don't have any - cacao powder is usually stronger so you might need to use more cocoa powder than the recipe calls for.
If you are concerned about your essential amino acids intake opt for soy milk or a soy based protein powder.
If you are looking to support your immune system consider adding a banana to this smoothie or some vegan probiotics.
Other things that you can add which are a great way to give this delicious shake a little nutrient boost without using any animal products include...
- hemp seeds / hemp hearts
- chia seeds
- ice cubes
- fresh banana / frozen banana
- brazil nuts
- cashews
- maple syrup
- cashew butter
- sunflower seeds
- medjool dates
- cacao nibs
- coffee
